Treat the register as evidence
Historical registers contain meaning beyond individual fields. Preserve the source register, page or reference alongside structured information so future administrators can understand where a record came from and resolve uncertainty responsibly.
Model people and families separately
A parish system should represent individuals, households, relationships, and changes over time. Avoid copying a paper layout directly into one oversized digital form; design structures that support search while respecting real family context.
Separate migration from correction
Do not silently “clean” uncertain historical information during entry. Establish statuses for verified, transcribed, incomplete, and disputed records, then give authorised reviewers a visible correction process.
Plan everyday administration
The long-term value comes from clear responsibilities for new members, family changes, documents, activities, permissions, and reports. Design these recurring tasks at the same time as the historical migration.
